The Hockey Hall of Fame is unexpectedly located within a shopping mall in downtown Toronto, but once inside fans completely forget that fact.

Just walking in the lobby you are immediately confronted with hockey history, through a huge display of goalie masks. Scanning the wall, it’s easy to see the evolution of the game’s equipment, not to mention the ferocity of the goalies.

Head up the stairs to the trophy room, where one of the three actual Stanley Cups is on display. Scanning the names is like reading the Who’s Who of Hockey, immortalizing each player who’s ever hoisted the cup above his head in victory. The room’s walls are adorned with the Hall’s inductees, highlighting each one’s achievements and contributions to the sport during their careers.

Inductees into the Hockey Hall of Fame may be selected by into one of three categories:

  • Player – hockey’s greatest players; because so many players play for multiple teams during their careers, each one enters the hall individually rather than with a specific team. The hall includes players preceding the NHL as well as star athletes from other countries or leagues. Both men and women are among the honorees.
  • Builder – hockey’s pioneers, executives, coaches and media
  • Referee/Linesman – Top regulators on the ice

The International Ice Hockey Federation Hall of Fame is housed within the Hockey Hall of Fame.
